I passed.

You would think I’d be happy about it but I’m not really. I did not do as well as I should have and as a result my final score for both tests was a 79.5 percent and I needed an 80 % average on both test in order to pass the coursed and apply for the program. I sent an e-mail to my instructor, a fantastic teacher, and asked her if that meant I would not be passing the class. As a result, she changed the score on my essay portion of the test bringing by one point giving me the 80% that I need to pass the class. With her changing the grade and my other course work, I ended up with a final grade of 85%, a good solid B and I can now apply for the second half of the program, So why do I feel bad? Why do I feel like I do not deserve to pass? This was the hardest class I have taken and I did work hard so why can’t I just be happy? I have never felt so bad about passing a class before. This sucks.

Don't sweat it. You may have just had a bad testing day. Happens all the time. It took me three tries to pas the Detective's exam. You did the work, so reap the benefits.

You're fine. That little bit of help from the professor would not have been given to you had the professor not thing you should have it.

I'm a really hard essay grader. When I have kids in the same situation as you I weigh their overall effort (in and out of class), how they did on their essays, and whether or not they were late with a lot of work. Any strikes against them and they get nothing from me. If the positives are evident, I'll give that point or 1/2 point (no more than that).

You will find that the lessons in compassion you learn via your professors will translate into the classroom. Kids have bad days, just as you might have. You professor realized that truth.

Just go forward and learn from the experience.

Thank you both. I appreciate the kind words and your right. If the instructor didn't think I deserved the extra points she wouldn't have given them. I am just glad the course is over and I can apply to the program and finish it up. Hopefully by the end of the next school year.

Don't feel bad and don't feel guilty. You worked hard and did your best. I don't think the intructor gave you the point you needed out of charity. He did it because he saw someone that worked hard and did their best in spite of the odds.

If he had given you 10 points I'd see where that would be unfair but enough to raise your average 1/2 a point is not a problem and is surely worth the effort you put forth.

It is the professors disgression how they grade and changing a grade for a hard working student by a point or two is certainly acceptable.

Smile, accept the point proudly and keep right on doing your best.

Don't ever beat yourself up for trying hard and someone helping you out by giving you a tiny bump to get you to the next level.

I have taught many classes at several of the local colleges, tech schools and universities. I see no problem at all giving a student a point or two for the effort they put in if it will help them move on to the next level.

The professor surely thinks you can handle the next level or else he would not have helped you out.

Smile. Be grateful and carry on.
